Electromagnetic Tracking of Rock Lobsters (Jasus novaehollandiae)

Abstract

A new method is described for tracking rock lobsters in habitats where the use of radio or ultrasonic telemetry is not feasible. Electromagnetic tags, weighing 8 g in seawater and characterized by the repetition rate of their pulse train, were fixed to the carapace of rock lobsters. Any tagged individual could be located and identified within the range of detection of a receiver connected to a loop antenna which could be either portable or permanently installed on the sea floor. Results showing movements of J. novaehollandiae in a coastal lagoon are presented.
