Abstract

A method of cataloguing and cross-indexing taxonomic, nomenclatural, and distributional data bas been developed as a model technique in filing for biologists specializing in systematics. The technique was developed expressly for the compilation of a laboratory gulde to the fish fauna of Australia. The system employs standard modern equipment, combining horizontal visible filing in trays for the main catalogue and rotary-mounted card units for cross-indexing. The units of equipment, design of cards, arrangement of units, arrangement of data, and scope of material are described in detail. Reasons are given for the selection of equipment and for the methods adopted. Manipulation of the index and its component parts is explained.
