Reassignment of the Compounds Reported to be 4,5-Dihydro-3H-1-benzazepin-5-ols as 2,3,4,5-Tetrahydro-2,5-epoxy-1H-1-benzazepines and 3,4,5,6-Tetrahydro-1,6-benzodiazocines as 2,3,3a,4-Tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]benzimidazoles

Abstract

Reexamination of the ¹H and ¹³C n.m.r. spectra of the supposed 4,5-dihydro-3H-1-benzazepin-5-ols (1) has led to a reassignment of their structure as 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2,5-epoxy-1H-1-benzazepines (3) and the new structure has been confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination of the 5-phenyl derivative (3; R¹ = H, R² = Ph). Similar examination of the n.m.r. spectra of the supposed 3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-1,6-benzodiazocines (2) has led to their reassignment as the pyrrolo [1,2-a] benzimidazoles (4).
