Some reactions of 1,l-diphenylethylene

Abstract

1,l-Diphenylethylene gives with p-benzoquinone a 2 : 1 adduct whose structure has been established as 5,12-diphenyl-7,14-dibenz[a,h] anthraquinone whereas with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate a 1 : 2 adduct is formed by an initial Diels-Alder addition followed by an indirect substitutive addition.
